Late 19th Century Kashmiri Hand-Painted Papier-Mâché Plant Stand
A beautiful late 19th century Kashmiri hand-painted papier-mâché plant stand, exquisitely decorated in the traditional style of the Kashmir region. The papier-mâché base is richly hand-painted with intricate floral designs and features a central medallion adorned with floral and bird motifs.
The stand is raised on elegant barley-twist brass legs terminating in distinctive hoof feet, creating an attractive contrast between the ornate painted base and the refined metalwork.
We believe this piece was constructed in two parts. While the hand-painted papier-mâché base is unmistakably Kashmiri in origin, the brass base—with its characteristic hoof feet and craftsmanship—is reminiscent of the style associated with the renowned French design house Maison Jansen, suggesting it may have been paired or mounted in Europe during the late 19th or early 20th century.
A highly decorative and unusual piece, ideal as a plant stand or accent table, combining the artistry of Kashmiri papier-mâché with elegant European design influences.

Condition Report
This piece is structurally sound and sturdy throughout, with age-related fading visible across parts of the surface, as shown. The hand-painted finish displays areas of wear and age, particularly around the edges, where the underlying material is visible.
The brass legs have developed a rich, deep patina over time. One leg is slightly bent; however, this does not affect the stability or balance of the stand. There are historic repairs in places, and the brass hoof feet also exhibit a deep patina, along with splits in certain areas, all clearly shown in the photographs.
Due to the age, character, and complexity of this piece, it is extremely difficult to capture every detail in photographs. We therefore strongly recommend carefully reviewing all images included in the listing and contacting us with any questions regarding the condition before purchasing, to ensure complete satisfaction and avoid disappointment.
